Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Therapy Overview

The Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Clinic provides assessment and therapy for individuals who use, or may benefit from, AAC systems. Services are tailored to each person’s unique needs.

We support both children and adults with communication differences due to:

  • Autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
  • Developmental language disorders
  • Motor speech disorders
  • Neurological conditions (e.g., stroke, ALS, traumatic brain injury)
  • Complex communication needs

Therapy focuses on:

  • AAC evaluations to determine the best communication system
  • Training in use of speech-generating devices, communication boards, and apps
  • Supporting language development, vocabulary expansion, and sentence building
  • Promoting functional communication at home, school, work, and in the community
  • Supporting multimodal communication skills
  • Implementing neurodiversity-affirming practices to best support neurodivergent clients
  • Educating families, caregivers, and professionals for consistent support across settings

By offering one-on-one intervention and/or small group practice, the AAC Clinic helps clients build communication skills in safe, structured, and real-world environments.
