The Alan E. Kazdin Endowed Lecture in Psychology

This annual lecture is supported by an endowment from Alan E. Kazdin, PhD in grateful acknowledgement of the impact that the faculty in Psychology has had on his career and no doubt on the careers of many others.  Kazdin is Sterling Professor of Psychology and Child Psychiatry at Yale University and an alumnus of the SJSU Psychology Department (1967).

Each year we invite a distinguished and influential speaker to inspire a new generation of psychologists and shape the future of our field and our society.

Spring 2026 Lecture

Phil Hammack, Ph.D.

Sexual and Gender Diversity in 21st Century America: Stories of Radical Authenticity and Radical Exclusion

                          Dr. Ricardo Munoz

Dr. Phillip Hammack is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Sexual and Gender Diversity Laboratory at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

He uses qualitative and mixed methods to study the experience and development of individuals diverse in their expressions of sexuality, gender, and/or intimacy. Among his recent major contributions are the articulation of frameworks for scientists and the general public to make meaning of the vast cultural changes in understandings of sexuality, gender, and relationships that have occurred this century. These frameworks especially emphasize the growth of fluid and nonbinary thinking, the role of social technologies, and the heightened emphasis on congruence between inner experience and external presentation of sexuality and gender through construction of personal narratives of “authenticity.”

Dr. Hammack’s forthcoming book, Radical Authenticity: The 21st Century Revolution in Gender, Sexuality, and Relationships, is expected to be published by Oxford University Press in early 2027.

When: March 3, 2026 | 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.
