Dr. Rebeca Burciaga is a Professor of Educational Leadership & Chicana and Chicano Studies. She served as the Founding Executive Director of the Institute for Emancipatory Education from 2020-2023. Her research is nested in the nepantla (borderlands) of Education and Chicana/o Studies and her current work focuses on emancipatory and culturally sustaining approaches to school and community leadership. Dr. Burciaga’s areas of expertise include qualitative methodologies (e.g. testimonio & ethnography), critical theories (e.g. critical race theory & Chicana feminist theories), and critical pedagogies (e.g. testimonio). Burciaga earned her B.A. from UC Santa Cruz, an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles. She is a co-founder of the Institute for Teachers of Color Committed to Racial Justice and her research has been supported by highly competitive funding including the Spencer Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the American Association of University Women. Her scholarship can be found in Educational Administration Quarterly, Equity & Excellence in Education, Race, Ethnicity and Education, Multicultural Perspectives, and the Association of Mexican American Educators Journal. Dr. Burciaga's true passion is art - she is a ceramic artist and weaver.
