Paradox: Bridging Creativity & Production in Packaging Design

Packaging design requires designers to balance creative exploration with the technical realities of structure, materials, printing, and production. Yet the transition from concept to manufacturing is often fragmented across disconnected tools and workflows, leading to miscommunication, late-stage errors, costly revisions, and material waste. Through research with packaging designers, print specialists, educators, and industry experts, this thesis explores how emerging technologies can reduce technical friction while preserving the creative control and judgment of the designer.


The resulting concept, Paradox, is an integrated packaging design tool that connects
dieline creation, real-time 3D visualization, and production-ready file preparation
within a unified workflow. By helping designers identify structural and print issues
earlier, visualize how two-dimensional designs translate into physical packages, and
prepare files with greater confidence, Paradox bridges the gap between creativity
and production. The project demonstrates how intelligent, semi-automated tools can
support better collaboration, reduce waste and rework, and give designers more time
to focus on creating thoughtful and distinctive packaging.
