History & Purpose

Legacy Month is hosted every year specifically in October to commemorate SJSU alumni Tommie Smith and John Carlos, who took a brave political stance for human rights during the 1968 Mexico City Olympics on October 16. The purpose of Legacy Month is to honor SJSU’s rich history of student activism, civic engagement, and social justice.

What began as Legacy Week expanded into a campus-wide Legacy Month. Today, it is a collaborative effort between the Associated Students Community Action Center, the Office of the President, the Black Leadership & Opportunity Center (BLOC), and various campus and community partners. In 2024, the City of San José marked a historic milestone by designating October 16th as official Tommie Smith & John Carlos Day.
